The silver lining of this event is that it reminds us, paradoxically, that Metro is really very safe. The last accident was 5 years ago.

Consider all the people that ride every day; and also consider the fact that it's such a big bullseye for terrorists that "terrorist attack on the DC metro" episodes are de rigeur for television crime dramas. That's a pretty good record! I don't know how it compares to the Chicago El, the NY Subway, or the BART, but it seems pretty good to me, given the circumstances.
